This piece dates to the late Victorian era, circa 1890. In the 1880s to 1890s an extremely feminine style of dress became fashionable with pale colours and materials such as lace and tulle which were draped and ruched across the bodice. To adapt to this new style of fashion, jewellery became lighter and smaller with a delicate romantic look. Star jewels appeared in large numbers in the form of pendants, brooches and hair ornaments and remained in great favour right up until the end of the century. Pearls became highly desired as their delicate sheen was perfectly suited to the pale silks and soft colours.
