This piece dates to the late Victorian era, circa 1890. Brooches became small and lightweight towards the end of the 19th century, to be worn with delicate materials such as lace and tulle. This piece would have been delicately pinned to a lace dress, the moonstone drop freely suspended to move and catch the light to best display its adularescence - a beautiful pearly opalescent play of light likened to the glow of the moon.
